Where are you with the data?

Have you ever heard someone say something to the effect of, “Everything you ever need in life to succeed, starts with you.” Well, that same philosophy applies to our businesses as well.

There are valuable insights right in front of our eyes, day in and day out.

Sometimes, the amount of data can be so overwhelming that it causes analysis paralysis, or simply the feeling of not wanting to be bothered with it at all.

But wouldn’t increase in revenue, better processes, or customer satisfaction be enough to cozy up to a spreadsheet, or enough to ask questions to learn more about what your customers like and want?

I often ask other business owners what they struggled with when they first started.

One in particular was the direct inspiration for today’s message.

Miss Diane kept running out of certain items in her clothing store, however there were other items that didn’t sell too well and caused her to have excessive inventory.

She decided to pay attention to what WAS selling by investigating her point-of-sale data, and tracking sales by product, size and color.

She looked at what was selling the best and adjusted her inventory. She took the slow-moving items and implemented targeted promotions. She told me after 3 months; she reduced her inventory by about 25% and increased her sales by 15%.

All of that information came from paying attention to what was already happening and what her customers were buying.

The data is in front of our faces. Happening as we speak. What are you doing with yours?

Getting Quick Insights:

Website analytics- If you are interested in where your visitors are coming from, what pages attract the most, if your site is effective at turning visitors to customers or leads or, if your site has performance issues that may be frustrating to viewers, then Google Analytics can provide valuable insight to take corrective action.

Point-of-Sale Systems are goldmines! You can track product, time, location and customer history. This information will help to solve problems with inventory, learn which products drive the most sales & are often bought together, and how to be effective at discounts and special offers.

Accounting software like QuickBooks and FreshBooks allows you to monitor your financial health in real time and to make sound decisions. You can see the products or services that are draining your resources, learn patterns and seasonal fluctuations to know how to better direct your attention, keep track of who owes you and what you owe, and to be able to detect frauds and errors.

Business data holds the key to significant growth and improvement. We don’t have to rely on our gut feelings, and outdated information when making business decisions.

Small changes based on data insights can yield significant results.

So, I encourage you, start analyzing your data today! Identify one key metric and begin tracking it! You will be amazed at what you discover!
