The Best Time To Tell On Yourself

Making Daily Progress ~Issue #29

All of the benefits of being held accountable~

There’s this wonderful lady I know who is in business just like me that needed someone to hold her accountable for a project she was trying to finish.

There were parts of it she really didn’t want to do, so procrastination was setting in, and it was becoming easier to find things to do in place of what needed to be done.

She wanted to start selling products online, so conducting market research, choosing a platform for her store, completing a website, setting up payment processing, and getting in touch with suppliers were necessary activities that she kept putting off.

So, I asked her when she wanted to have the market research completed. After giving me a date (which was like pulling teeth) I asked her what actions are going to be taken before that date to make sure that it is completed on time. She told me WHAT she was going to do and WHEN, and she was to call me when she completed a task. If she missed a call, I called her.

We stayed in communication, not every day, and sometimes we even went a couple of weeks, depending on the deadlines that were set. We followed this process until she was complete, and within 2 months, her store was up.

She told me she had been putting this off for months. Forcing herself to set dates and being held accountable helped her a great deal. A lot of times, it is the push we need.

In the past……

~I would make plans and say that there was something I was going to complete, and then life got in the way, and it never got done. I didn’t hold myself, nor was there anyone there to hold me accountable.

~I thought it was a great idea to keep plans private, because it’s ‘really no one else’s business’ what I am doing. I let past experiences, bad advice and discouragement be the main reasons for keeping things to myself.

~I felt like because I am an adult, I should be able to handle my own business without the need of someone helping me, or reminding me, or encouraging me. I got this. A lot of times I didn’t.

People who are doing big things, and getting a lot done have powerful support systems, and are surrounded by like-minded people.

Finding the right person….

It is important. Someone who is supportive and understands what you are trying to do, is essential.

There must be an understanding from the very beginning of what is to be expected.

For example, not only will you be telling them WHAT you are doing, but you will be telling them WHEN, and when you will be calling to report task completion.

They are there to remind you of what your purpose is in case things get hard, which they usually do, which is why people stop.

Remember….

~Think about what it is you want to make possible for yourself.

~Figure out what you intend to DO ABOUT IT.

~And when you set those intentions, come up with DATES as to when it is to be done.

Then….

Find someone who will support your efforts and encourage you to continue. It could be family, a supportive friend, or someone else in business.

Give the dates to when each task is to be completed, and the times you will call to report.

Then start GETTING THINGS DONE!

Remember the times, when the only reason you did something was because you knew someone else was expecting you to do it, or they were watching? Otherwise, you wouldn’t have done it. We talk ourselves out of doing things all of the time. The right accountability partner won’t allow that to happen. So, go tell on yourself. 😊✨✨

Quote of the day

Happy People in the Workplace, jumping for joy.

‘There are no organizations without institutional habits. There are only places where they are deliberately designed, and places where they are created without forethought, so they often grow from rivalries or fear.’

~Charles Duhigg-The Power of Habit

If one believes that the institutional habits of their organization have no effect in business, well, it surely does. One with open communication, and positive leadership, will go forward and up. If someone has great ideas, and they get shut down, or find it hard to communicate, or are resented for it, how can they add on? And what if it was multiple employees who felt this way?

Disagreements, fear of communication, resentments, all get in the way of the main objective, and that is the growth, and sustainability of the business. Be deliberate in your design. ~
