I have been talking to some people who are either attempting to use their personal credit for business funding or already in the process of doing it. This is a very common thing.

For those just starting out, if I could sit down, and talk to them, this is what I would say:

Have your business stand on its own, with its own identity.

The name of the game is reducing the need for personal guarantees. We absolutely DO NOT have time to be personally liable for our business’s debts.

And when our business stands on its own, it starts to become very attractive to partners, investors, lessors, and suppliers. Lenders absolutely love established businesses.

There are a few things you can do right now to start making progress in your journey to business credit worthiness:

Get yourself a DUNS number. This tracks your business transactions and activities. This also comes in handy if you are seeking government contracts or need access to financing. Here’s the link for more information.

Establish lines of credit and or get yourself a secured business card AND PAY ON TIME! A day late is unacceptable.

It has always been stated to keep the business and your personal life separate. That is for good measure. Your business is your baby and must stand on its own. This builds credibility and trust with people you will be doing business with like your vendors and suppliers, even people who want to invest in you.
